José lives in the village of Tierra Baja in Colombia and is a participant in Granitas de Paz’s Productive Patios program. He is enrolled in tenth grade, where he studies urban agriculture and eagerly fills his free time with growing spinach, green beans, eggplant, fresh chili and basil.
Jose’s mother stays at home and takes care of the family, handles domestic activities and is an independent vendor. His sister, who is 12 years old, attends high school and Jose’s uncle also lives with them and is currently unemployed. His family has unfortunately not been able to support Jose’s desire to farm because of the family’s small income.
